Recipe for Pumpkin Soup

The earth

to hold the

seed planted by

small hands

nurtured by

rain

soft fertile earth

captured water fed by

small hands

it grows

we wait

it grows

it grows

pale yellow to

sun-kissed orange

two small hands cut

stem from vine

six small hands carry

it inside

eight small hands cut

open-exposing

flesh roasted with

carrots onions

peppers and

two yams jump into one

large pot

to simmer

we wait

it cooks

we wait

grated ginger salt

cardamom nutmeg

coconut milk smooth it out

served in vessel

from which it

came

for all to eat

tasting this sweetness this

community soup.
